At first glance, graduation photos might seem simple..



But pricing varies because you’re not just paying for someone to take photos, you’re paying for how reliable the quality of your photos (and your experience while shooting them) is going to be. 

If you’ve ever tried the cheap fix service for your car or house and ended up paying the full price (or even more) later anyway, you know how frustrating it can be. The adage of “buy it right or buy it twice” applies to your grad photos, too. 

When paying professional photographer, you have the added security of knowing they’re showing up with:

• Backup equipment & backup plans

At this level, photographers often have their own booking website, are building a portfolio and book sessions more consistently. They might have some built-in routines for their sessions, and often work well with clients that have prepared vision and ideas. 



But quality often varies widely. These photographers often have less experience with awkward or camera-shy clients, complex lighting situations, tight timelines or very specific artistic preferences. 

This tier will likely generate higher quality photos with greater consistency, but still comes with uncertainty. They will have some sessions that turned out great but those with unexpected constraints might not go so well.

$270-$600: Consistent professionals

This pricing threshold is typically consistent with professional photography services.



At this level, you can expect a professional understanding of posing and composition, adaptability to lighting and location changes, more refined editing and confident coaching throughout your session. You can also expect your photographer to have all of the necessary backup equipment and a solid business/booking process.  

They may limit sessions to specific lighting or locations they know well, which helps ensure quality, and will often bring their own creative suggestions and direction to help you achieve your vision. At this price level, you can begin to expect more knowledge, consistency and efficiency during your sessions. What you see on their website is typically the level of quality you can expect from your own session.

$600+: Full-time, seasoned professionals

Photographers in this range are full-time professional photographers. Their work is extremely consistent and of high quality, and you can feel assured they’ll have the skills you execute on your vision. They’re highly experienced with directing people, managing session logistics and adapting on-the-go.  Their booking, sessions and editing are often highly systemized and incredibly efficient, often making their turn-around quicker. 



Sessions tend to be longer, more intentional, and fully guided. This tier prioritizes professionalism and client comfort, so you’re more likely to have a seamless, easy experience during your session.
